FIFA World Cup 2010: New Jambulani Ball Spells Jumbo Problems For Goalkeepers

World Cup 2010

The new Jambulani ball designed for FIFA World Cup 2010 is headed for controversy. It has already caused a lot of talk among players. Players are generally wary of the new ball, especially goalkeepers, who have expressed the fear that the ball moves too quickly, for comfort. That apart, they also claim that the ball is not easy to handle.

The ball used at the World Cup 1966 final was created by stitching together 18 pieces of leather. In contrast, the ball for this year's tournament has been made by gluing together eight pieces of synthetic material.

The engineers who designed the Jambulani ball claim that there has never been a more consistent ball. In other words, they imply that the ball is likely to move in a predictable way, at all times. This would according to the good men allow a player to exercise his skills without any fear of the ball negating his efforts.

The designers who are from Loughbrough University also claim that this is the first perfectly spherical ball, in the history of football. The Jambulani ball is said to have been tested, under the supervision of Dr. Andy Harland, by having it kicked by a robot. The testing is said to have been fairly comprehensive, with free kicks, corners, shots on goal and passes all faithfully reproduced.

Dr. Harland has claimed that the ball manufactured by Adidas passed the test by moving through the air more smoothly and hitting the targets more reliably than balls used at previous World Cups.

The scientist has revealed that the grooves on the ball's surface were designed aerodynamically, by using a wind tunnel. The grooves are said to help in guiding the ball in its flight. In previous balls, the grooves were positioned by the seams, which are said to be conspicuously absent on the Jambulani ball, thereby allowing the grooves to be put wherever the engineers wanted.

This is said to have resulted in the ball's flying symmetry, as claimed by the engineers. The ball is not an inexpensive piece of merchandise. In fact, it could cost as much as four times more than a ball used in league football. The researchers at Loughborough University are convinced that the ball is worth its price and pooh pooh players' claims that the ball is faster than normal. The scientists blame the ball's speed on the incidence of high altitude venues, where the thinner air causes the ball to move faster.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Who is More Likely to Succeed, Rooney or Messi?

World Cup 2010

Lionel Messi, the star striker for Barcelona and Argentina, will celebrate his 23rd birthday, on June 24, while the FIFA World Cup 2010 is on. Wayne Rooney, his counterpart at Manchester United and England, will turn 25, in October.

Mention either of these players, and chances are, you will also mention the other, because these are arguably the two best players in the world. Both are geniuses on the football field who can transform the fortunes of their respective teams, if they are fully fit and playing to potential.

Hence the question:  who is more likely to set the World Cup 2010 ablaze with his performance, Rooney or Messi?

They have had amazing similarities in their careers. Both players were signed by clubs at age 11, Messi by Barcelona, Rooney by Everton.  Rooney held the record for the youngest player to represent a team in the EPL; Messi was the team's youngest ever player, when he debuted in the Spanish League (La Liga). Messi was the youngest to score a goal in La Liga; Rooney held the record for being the youngest ever scorer in the EPL. Both players achieved the feat before they turned 17. Rooney who got a debut hat-trick for Man U also went to become the youngest international for England, in 2003.

The coincidences don't end there. Both players completed 100 goals for their respective club teams, in January 2010. Both players chose the 2010 season to score 4 goals in a single match. Messi did it against Arsenal in the Champions League, while Rooney's four goals came in a match against Hull.

There are some differences, too: To start with, Messi  is slightly built and 5'7" tall; Rooney is 3 inches taller, and built like a bull.

Championships Won:

Messi has been a part of championship winning Barcelona on 12 occasions, including the Champions League twice, and the FIFA Club World Cup, once. He has also helped Argentina win two titles, the FIFA U-20 World Cup, and an Olympic Gold at Beijing.

Rooney has won eight titles, all for Manchester United, including the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup, once each. Both players have a host of individual awards. Messi would have particularly relished winning the World Soccer Player of The Year award, 2009.

Fittingly, both players are among the richest in their respective leagues. Rooney has several commercial endorsements, apart from a lucrative book deal with Harper and Collins.

Personal Endorsements:

Both players have gushing endorsements from players and managers. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, England player, Steven Gerrard, Chelsea boss, Ancellotti,  Mark Lorenson, Argentina player, Tevez, Rooney's Man U teammate, Wes Brown, David Beckham, and ex-England strikers, Shearer and Lineker, are all unanimous in their view that Rooney is the best player in the world.

Brazilian midfielder Kaka, his Argentina teammates, Deco and Riquelme, Barcelona boss Laporta, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola, Arsenal FC Forward and Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner, Real Madrid striker Arjen Robben, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger are amon Messi's abiding fans. In fact, La Porta claims that Messi is the greatest player of all time. Maradona has anointed Messi as his successor, while Pele who predicted that Messi would get the FIFA best player award in 2009, says Messi should first establish as the best ever Argentina player, and also score 1,000 goals before he can replace the Brazilian legend as the best ever.

Strengths:

Rooney is fast and strongly built and uses his physical strength to get past defenders. He is comfortable playing through the middle, and can operate on his own, up front. He is naturally gifted, and extremely opportunistic, and inventive. He revels in unleashing powerful volleys from the top of the box. Rooney owes his physical strength to four years spent in amateur boxing. Although a striker, he excels from deep, and capitalizes on his close control and strength while running at defenders even as he uses vision to create openings for others.

Messi  is arguably the best dribbler in the world, and can dance his way past defences. He has, in a club game replicated Maradona's goal against England in the `1986 quarter final, dribbling past 6 players and running the same distance as the Argentina legend did on that occasion. Messi displays quintessential South American flair, and his goals come from close range, inside the box, and depend not so much on power, as on guile and precision.

Weaknesses:

Rooney has been injury prone. He has also shown a penchant for being hot headed. Messi has also had injury issues. There are no perceptible weaknesses in his game, but nitpickers could claim that he has not been as successful for Barcelona, in away games, as he has been in home games. Also, Messi is yet to play to potential for Argentina - the team had a mediocre showing in the qualifiers. Could it be that he doesn't have as great a supporting cast in the national team, as in Barcelona, which has the likes of Xavi, Pedro and Pichichi combining well with Messi?

In contrast, Rooney has been prolific for England, with 25 strikes in just over twice as many matches. There are critics who claim that Rooney is over-rated and is likely to meet his comeuppance whenever he meets a strong South American team. The best way to dispel such doubts is for Rooney to perform on the field. To his credit, Rooney scored a goal in a 3-2 win in a friendly, against Argentina, in 2005.

Recent form:

Both players have been in tremendous form in 2010. Rooney has had 34 goals from 44 appearances for Man U, and Messi  47 goals in 53 appearances.

Prospects in World Cup 2010:

Although Messi's relatively unimpressive record for Argentina is an argument used against him, he had a goal against Croatia in World Cup 2006. In contrast, Rooney had a lacklustre goal-less outing, in Germany, in 2006, playing in the shadow of injury until his ignominious red-card exit in the quarter-final. But all that will be history, when the tournament kicks off in South Africa, come June 11.

Sports in South Africa - From Swimming to Rugby

South Africa 2010

The New South Africa

Did you know- The new South Africa - post Apartheid-- made its Olympic debut in the Olympiad in Barcelona'92.From the 1900s to 1960,they had participated representing the white-ruled South Africa. During that time, ironically, there were many Olympic champions from South Africa: Esther Brand (athletics/ women's high jump), William Smith (boxing), Joan Harrison (swimming/ women's 100m backstroke), Geral Dreyer (boxing), Reggie Walker (track & field/ 100m), George Hunter (boxing), Rudolph Lewis (cycling), Charles Winslow (tennis), and Kenneth McArthur (men's marathon).

Olympic Movement

Did you know- SA sent athletes to the 1960 Rome Olympics, but this appearance was its last until 1992. Why? Because of the nation's policy of apartheid, from the 1960s to 1991, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), under the pressure from Africa, Guyana, and India, ousted the white-ruled South Africa from the Olympic Movement. In that time, SA was condemned by the United Nations and other major international organizations, including the International Olympic Committee. As a result, the South African athletes could not compete in the Games and a host of World Championships, from soccer, athletics, swimming and basketball to archery, fencing and gymnastics.

National Idols

Did you know- South Africa's swimmer Penny Heyns was unknown until 1996 when she won two golds in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In that Olympiad, she, a white girl, became the first non-European swimmer to win the women's 100-meter breaststroke since 1972. On the other hand, Miss Heyns received a heroine's welcome when she won the Olympic titles. Like Charlize Theron ( world-famous actress) and Nadine Gordimer (1991 Nobel Prize), she is an idol in the African nation.

African Games & Olympics

Did you know- At the Pan African Games, between September 13 and September 23, 1995, in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, the Olympic team of South Africa finished first in the medal count, with an African record of 154 medals ( 64 gold, 51 silver, 39 bronze), outpacing Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria. Following on from its success at the African Games, the South African team competed in the 26th Olympiad in America, between July 19 and August 4, 1996. At the Atlanta Summer Olympics, the African team placed 27th in the tally of gold medals ( two in women's swimming and one in men's marathon).

1948 Olympics

Did you know- At the London Olympics in 1948, South Africa took 18th place in unofficial team standings, outpacing Norway, Austria and India.

Rugby

Did you know- The South African rugby team is listed among the world's best teams.

ICC World Cup 2011 Quarter-Final: Pakistan's Probable Team Against West Indies

World Cup 2010

Pakistan are set to meet West Indies in the first quarter-final of ICC World Cup 2011, at Mirpur, Bangladesh, on Wednesday, March 23.

Afridi's men are overwhelming favourites to win the game and become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals, for a possible meeting with the winner of the India-Australia quarter-final match, on Thursday, March 24.

My list of the best Pakistan eleven to take on West Indies is as follows: Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Misbah, Umar Akmal, Razzaq, Gul, Afridi, Ajmal, Rehman, Akhtar. You would have noticed that I have omitted Hafeez, who has proven to be a walking wicket for rival bowlers to whet their appetites with. Asad Shafiq has had good outings in his last two games and was particularly impressive under pressure against Australia. Pakistan need his calming influence at the top of the order and if the opening batsmen can last through the first power play, they should have set the stage for Younis and Misbah to peddle their wares, in the middle order.

Afridi has named Umar Akmal as a possible contender for Man of the Tournament, and those who watched the young batsman's innings against Australia won't scoff at the Pakistan's skipper's statement. In my ideal team, Razzaq would come ahead of Afridi in the order. Afridi's indifferent batting form translates into an additional cheap wicket, before Razzaq appears, and adds to the pressure. I would also advocate sending Gul ahead of Afridi. Gul has been very effective with the bat and unlike his skipper appears to understand his batting limitations and operates within them.

The dropping of Hafeez will give Pakistan the option of playing five bowlers and that fifth bowler is Ajmal whose spin bowling should help keep the Windies batsmen in check, more effectively than a seam bowler would.

I have also included Akhtar in place of Riaz, because Pakistan can afford to experiment in this game. While Akhtar's confidence was shattered against New Zealand, his speed makes him a formidable bowler for any batting line up, and he could prove an asset, in the semi-finals, against an Indian middle order that does not relish the short fast stuff. But before that happens, Akhtar will need to regain his confidence and the West Indies match will give him that opportunity.

The Pakistan think tank has been extremely loathe to experiment or else they would have brought in Asad Shafiq much earlier in the tournament, or tried Razzaq as an opener. The fact that they did not do so makes me wonder whether they would actually go with five bowlers. But they must realize that the Windies game is their last chance to experiment.

Top Travel Trends in 2010

South Africa 2010

The holidays next year will be to a great extent affected by the economic recession most countries suffered this year. That however does not mean that people will not go on holiday, but that instead they will be more careful with how and on what they spend their money. Holiday makers will spend more time searching for great deals, such as exploring new travel destinations to find the best bargains and joining Online Travel Agencies (OTA) to gain good discounts. Below are some of the predicted top travel trends for the year 2010.

1 - Looking for budget options

Economical holidays will the key deciding factor this year, with holiday makers searching out the best budget details and discounts. Make sure when you plan your holiday this year, not to just go for what looks like the best rate, but hunt deeper for complementary give-aways, such as a free night's stay on a multiple night stay, gift cards, spa credits, coupons and free dining etc.

2 - Eco Travel

Humans are slowly but steadily becoming more aware of their impact on nature. Think 'green' is the trend these days, with its effects being felt even by the travel industry. Most travelers look for eco friendly holiday options, holidays that cause minimum damage to nature. Eco travel was born out of this need and is a continuing trend for 2010.

3- Mixing business with pleasure

The world is always on the go, with most travelers finding it more economical and viable to mix business with pleasure. Nowadays business travelers look for accommodation options that cater to all their business needs while providing leisure activities as well, so they can enjoy the best of both worlds.

4 - Latin adventure

Latin America is finding itself growing more and more popular with travelers as a luxury travel destination.

5 - Train Travel

Rail travel in Europe has grown popular, as this is an economical way of traveling while enjoying the wonderful scenery on the way. This has become even more popular with the new high speed rail links into Spain and Italy.

6- Going Mobile

With the growth of mobile applications and capabilities, it is now even easier to plan your travels, such as tracking flight information and planning itineraries. Mobile phones now play a very important role for travelers in helping them with their travel planning. They are used to receive information from travel agents etc and are fast proving to be invaluable to travelers.

7 - One platform for travel plans

With the busy schedules most of us have, it is easier to have one central platform from which to plan your travel details. This way you can keep track of everything happening in the travel industry, be up to date on the latest happenings and not just make one off purchases. The Internet offers strong travel centric sites where such central services are offered, so that people can plan every aspect of their travels, from creating the trip, to searching for accommodation, getting advice about the intended trip, finding the best deals down to updating profiles so as to keep friends and family informed.

8 - Adventure Travel

The year 2010 will find people looking for holidays with more action. Most now look beyond the standard and look for adventure such as jumping out helicopters, skiing, safaris, bungee jumping as well as more personalized holidays with private tours of museums and art galleries. For the more adventurous a growing trend is to take a high-speed car tour around major cities!

9 - Seeking out new hotspots

As with everything in this world trends change. As travelers expand their travel horizons, China, India and the Gulf States find themselves growing into the latest hotspots. This trend will grow more in 2010 as travel to the ever popular European destinations at the moment for most, is not economical. So traveling to China, India and the Gulf States gives the traveler an exotic holiday while being easy on the purse, with favorable exchange rates and low travel costs.

When Apartheid Began in South Africa

South Africa 2010

Apartheid was an event that had impacted so many lives of the people in South Africa. It was a policy that became effective in 1948. Many people are interested to know the answer to the question when did Apartheid start.

1. The first answer to the question when did Apartheid start is in the early years of the nineteenth century when the laws specifically for black citizens were created. These were the rules that the blacks only had to follow. These also became the foundation of the Apartheid.

2. The second answer to the question when did Apartheid start is in 1948 when the party called the Afrikaner came to power. They had a plan to create rules so the blacks and the white would have a clear separation. They made laws that covered each aspect in life. They banned the marriage of a white and a black person. They also made jobs specifically for the white people only.

3. The third answer to the question when did Apartheid start is in the fifties when a rule known as the Population Registration Act was made. It mentioned that in South Africa there are 3 official races that should be recognized namely; colored, whites and blacks. The Indians, Asians and those who were part black were the ones that were categorized as the colored race. Anyone who refused to this ruling would get a major punishment from the government.

4. The fourth answer to the question when did Apartheid start is when The Homelands Law became effective. This ruling stated that there are specific places where colored and blacks can only live. The privileges of the colored and the blacks have limitations. There are places in South Africa which they cannot easily enter if they don't carry the necessary papers.

5. The fifth answer to the question when did Apartheid start is when the Public Safety Act took effect. This law declared that people who rebel against the government will be punished. The people can get imprisoned for several months. Many black people were kept in prison for several years. They also received torture and Nelson Mandela was one of them.

The Apartheid came to an end in the nineties. This happened because of the pressure that came from the other countries to abolish the laws that discriminates the people. It also happened because of the series of street demonstrations that people did to express their desire for the abolishment of the laws. The first fair elections among all the South African citizens happened in 1994.

Perpetuum Jazzile - Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika

A brand new and fresh rendition of Southafrican anthem Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica, performed in 5 languages (Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Africaans, English) by an XL vocal group Perpetuum Jazzile (Slovenia). "Dear Southafrican friends, honouring the big and immeasurably important steps you and your compatriots have taken in the last decades towards finding the great strength of ethnic and cultural diversity of your beautiful country, we - Perpetuum Jazzile vocal group, where tolerance and multiculturalism stand at the forefront of everything we do - would like to say a big thank you for all your humanity, wisdom, and courage, which blended into one of the brightest contributions to the history of mankind, let alone its future. Moreover, we would kindly ask you to accept a brand new rendition of your beloved Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica as our gift of gratitude to you! Robben Island, South Africa - Place Of Sorrows

South Africa 2010

Islands are normally associated with unrestricted freedom. If inhabited, islands represent a lazy lifestyle far removed from society's rules and regulations. Robben Island though, has a history of deep sorrow, drenched in the coldness that the human heart can bestow on others dissimilar to their own kind.

The story of Robben Island started in 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck landed in Cape Town on orders from the Dutch East Indian Company to establish a post where boats could harbour on way to the East. He almost immediately started to use the Island - which is only a few kilometers from the mainland - as a place where troublemakers could be kept away from the growing community.

The first political prisoner, Autshumato, was exiled in 1658, simply because he was taking back cattle that his people believed to have been unfairly confiscated by European settlers. Prisoners were also brought from other countries. Most of them strong-willed rebels that were removed from their societies before they could stir too much trouble.

They were soon joined by ordinary criminals, the mentally ill, lepers and even prostitutes who could spread diseases. Island life became very harsh with no kindness felt or offered. Robben Island had started it's culture of alienation.

Long before its most famous prisoner, Nelson Mandela, another great indigenous leader, Makana, was held captive on Robben Island. He was a strong Xhosa leader who fought against the British over land issues during the early part of the eighteen hundreds, but surrendered in order to negotiate a meaningful peace. He was unceremoniously transported to the Island and died there far removed from his people.

During the reign of the Apartheid regime, discrimination against non-white people escalated and basic human rights became non-existent. Many fighters for freedom were imprisoned on Robben Island during those dark decades. They faced an iron hand and human interaction was kept to the minimum.

There is one heart-gripping story where the political prisoners where marched past the isolated house where Robert Sobukwe was kept in solitary confinement. At that moment he was in the garden and when he saw the other prisoners he got onto his knees, picked up a hand full of sand and let it filter through his fingers as a solitary gesture of communication.

Nelson Mandela, one of the world's most revered leaders, spent 27 years in jail, most of that on Robben Island, for his participation in the cause for freedom. When the world community met this remarkable man after so many years in jail, they were amazed. Here was a man whose life had been effectively robbed from him and instead of an angry man, we all saw a generous man emerging with steady eyes and a mischievous smile.

Robben Island that should have killed the human spirit, had only succeeded in producing an emphatic healer of a divided country.

A visit to Cape Town cannot be concluded without getting on the boat from the Cape Town Waterfront and walking in and around the infamous and at the same time famous jail that kept many different kinds of people behind bars over the centuries.

The South Africa World Cup 2010 - Which Team Will Win?

World Cup 2010

Qualifying stages for the World Cup 2010 are almost over, with the competition taking place in less than a year. Now seems like a good time to appraise which teams might falter and which may perform well. At the conclusion of the playoffs, when the teams are finalized, several of the future qualifiers may turn out to be expected trophy winners.

A major factor in who may have the highest likelihood of becoming World Cup Champions is where the competition would be held. Africa will host its first World Cup competition in 2010. Exhaustion from travel could be a factor for teams from Europe and the Americas, while African teams could benefit from playing on their home soil.

When the competition was held for the first time in Asia in 2002, some people said the same. However, European and South American teams remained in command for that particular event as well. The African teams have shown great promise and are now considered serious contenders in football along with the two primary continents.

The only probable finalists expected to come from the teams already seated in the finals are Spain and Brazil. Aside from a misstep in the Confederations Cup, recently, Spain is looking like the team that won Euro 2008. Their errors in the Confederations Cup may actually prove to help educate them on what they need to avoid in the 2010 competition.

Moving past a rocky start when Dunga first commanded the team, Brazil now looks to be the team to beat. They sent a strong message with their win recently over Argentina and look to be ready to take the 2010 World Cup. Brazil's capacity to combine pure talent with contemporary organization, seems to be a winning combination for them.

There are also a few other notables who are worth noting who also mostly come from the commanding continents. Joining Spain and Brazil, England, Holland, and Ivory Coast are expected to be among the validated countries in the list of finalists. Unlike Spain and Brazil however, these three have lacked consistency and power over this past year which will be a concern.

As things stand right now, with the final group of countries not yet decided, Brazil would be the favorite to win the 2010 World Cup. Their ability to turn out top notch football talent, along with the form that they have exhibited make them a force to be reckoned with. Brazil could very well seal their date with destiny if Dunga is able to keep his team inspired and maintain their current form.

South Africa in the Movies

South Africa 2010

With its beautiful backdrops, fascinating culture and tumultuous history, it's no surprise that South Africa has been the setting for several successful movies. The combination of mountains and movie stars is undoubtedly a recipe for success as the popularity of these films has demonstrated.

Invictus

The most recent film to be made about South Africa, Invictus merges the story of Nelson Mandela's opening year in office with the progress of the national rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 World Cup. The film documents Mandela's attempts to use the success of the sports team to unite a country that has suffered from a rift for many years. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon this was sure to be a box office hit for 2010. The World Cup final takes place in Cape Town, and during the build up the viewer is privy to some phenomenal shots of Table Mountain and the surrounding landscapes. Nominated for two Oscars and a Golden Globe, this film perfectly encapsulates South Africa's history and tells the story of one its most famous leaders.

Blood Diamond

In Blood Diamond, you will see a slightly different side of South Africa and parts of this film are certainly not for the faint-hearted. However, it relays an important message about the way in which many of the diamonds worn by westerners have been acquired. The movie is set in a number of locations, depicting small local villages, the city of Cape Town, and the forests and mountains surrounding the city. The lead role really gives Leonardo di Caprio the chance to test out a more rough and ready style of acting, though his South African accent can be questionable at times. Though this film is heart-wrenching in some places and somewhat violent in others, it raises awareness about the blood diamonds that are being exported out of the country even now.

District 9

Mingling everyday life in South Africa with the arrival of extra-terrestrials, this film focuses purely on fantasy. The film tells of the arrival of an enormous space ship over Cape Town, from which an entire race of aliens exit and set up home in slums on the outskirts of the city. In the course of the film, a government agent becomes exposed to the aliens' biotechnology, and as he begins to slowly evolve into an extra-terrestrial being himself, he begins to understand the plight of the aliens and fight their corner. Less of a depiction of South Africa's history or contemporary life, this film focuses purely on the futuristic sci-fi. However, as the camera pans out across the slums, the backdrop of Table Mountain never fails to impress. Nominated for 4 Oscars, District 9 is an interesting take on the South African lifestyle.

Boasting a wealth of interesting history, intriguing culture, and beautiful scenery, South Africa is not only an ideal topic for a film, but it is the perfect location for filming. Many box office bonanzas have been produced either on, or in, this fascinating location, and many more are yet to come.
