Endangered Species in South Africa Are Facing Extinction

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you excited for your African Safari? Are you waiting in anticipation to see the grandeur of the rhinoceros or the sheer size of the great elephant? If you are, then you better act quickly because according to recent findings and research, these animals are only some of the wildlife that is on the endangered species list in South Africa

Endangered species are animals that are categorized according to how threatened they are in relation to becoming extinct. In terms of wildlife animals that we would normally spot on our Sabi Sands safari, animals like the Black Rhinoceros are "critically endangered" and are in high risk of becoming extinct very soon. The Black Rhinoceros is found in dry areas like the desert to wetter areas like forests but their highest density occurs on the bushveld. This endangered species with its poor eyesight but excellent hearing is in danger of full extinction and sadly this is owing to the fact that this species is in high demand for their endangered horns. They have been vulnerable to extinction since the 1960s and when last counted in 2003, South Africa had 1284 Black Rhino's. Other South African species that are critically endangered are the Riverine Rabbit and the Golden Mole.

Next on the endangered species list is the "endangered" section. The Wild Dog is a part of this list as this dog shows a rapidly decreasing population and is in serious danger of becoming extinct. This endangered species is found in areas of South Africa as well as the Sahara desert and even close to Kilimanjaro. Already expected to be extinct in many African countries, this endangered species has an estimated population of 5500 worldwide with only 400 of those residing in South Africa. The reason why these animals are so highly endangered is because of factors such as infectious disease, habitat fragmentation and conflict with our species.

A wildlife species many of us are fascinated with but are unfortunately endangered is the African Elephant. The sad truth is that this elephant is also feature on the vulnerable list and is an endangered species. This larger than life animal can be found in grasslands, deserts, forest and marshes and these majestic creatures are smarter than they come across. Unfortunately these animals have become endangered species also owing to the fact that they are killed for their ivory tusks. It is estimated that at the beginning of the 19th century, there was a population of as many as 27 million elephants but the last figures taken in 2004 show that this number has depleted to as little as 402 000.

So while you are sightseeing on your Kruger park Safari, make sure that you take a second to really appreciate the animals that you see and know that it is more of a privileged than a right. Make sure that you have the opportunity to see these creatures in their natural habitat before it's too late and they become endangered species or even worse, extinct.

Are You Ready For the World Cup?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As you're probably aware, the 2010 world cup is almost upon us. Held in South Africa, this tournament promises to be the best yet. Millions of people are getting ready and organising parties and booking time off work, are you?

1. Because the first two England games are on a Saturday and Friday, you won't need to take any time off work if you work office hours. The final group stage game is on a Wednesday, so you might need to take the afternoon off work, or see if you can finish work early.

2. You'll want to find an appropriate venue to watch the games you're interested in. Perhaps you'll stay at home, or maybe you prefer to watch football in a local bar with your friends.

3. If you watch the game in a bar, you'll need to make sure that you arrive in plenty of time for the match. You'll want to make the most of the game, and find out the teams, and the other important ore match information that might affect the game.

4. As the first two England games are in the evening, you might want to think about food eitsher before or after the game. Perhaps you'll have come straight from work, and won't have had time to eat. Miany bars that are showing the games will have special offers on food, or perhaps even world cup themed meals to tempt you.

5. As well as eating, you might want a drink too. it's important to remember that if you're in the car, you won't be able to drink, so you'll have to stick to non alcoholic drinks.

6. You'll want to give your team plenty of support, so why not go the whole hog and get your face painted, and wear the shirt and generally get in the mood? There's bound to be other people who are as fanatical as your, and so you won't stick out too much.

7. You'll enjoy spending time watching the World Cup with your friends and family, and you might make a night of it after the games, or perhaps you'll watch other games, and see how they might affect the draw for the next round.

8. Because TV and projectors have improved, and large screen technology has moved on dramatically since the last World Cup, the picture and sound will be incredible. Imagine watching your team win the World Cup Final in HD, or seeing that incredible goal or save again in fantastic quality.

9. Instead of watching the games at home, or on your own, why not experience the party atmosphere of your local bar? With many bars taking the 2010 World cup seriously, and decorating the premises and having additional screens or opening hours, you're bound to have a great time, whoever you support. Why not see what your local bar is doing? if they're currently not doing much, then why not make some suggestions?

10. Maybe you've booked the whole month of June off, or have changed your shifts and begged and pleaded with staff to change days off, so that you can watch every game. Maybe you're getting your shirts ready, and choosing face paint ideas, or making sure that people know not to ring you. If you're that organised now, you'll definitely be ready for the World Cup in June!

Now you know more about what you need to do before the 2010 World Cup starts, have you got everything you need?

If you're looking for somewhere to watch the World Cup, your local Revolution bar is the ideal place. With big screens to watch the match on, excellent food and drink offers, and a fantastic atmosphere, you'll win at Revolution, even if your team doesn't. Why not book your own private World Cup Party today to avoid disappointment?

Do Not Bet Against the South African Rand in 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

South Africa's economy will face a challenging 2010. While South Africa is surviving the international economic disasters of the past 18 months, it has not remained unscathed. Many indicators point to a positive 2010. The 'science' of Economics is (in my opinion) first and foremost a social science, but there are a number of positive comments and reports I would like to refer to.

In the 28 December 2009 edition of the Bangkok Post, Michael Preiss, Senior Investment Adviser at Standard Chartered Private Bank, wrote the following: "Borrowing US dollars to invest in Brazilian real made a 40% net/net return, the best carry trade of 2009, followed by South African rand at 33%"

Considering that the year ahead will see a less volatile Rand, returns like those noted above should not be expected. However, I believe that the outlook for the Rand, and the South African economy, should not be underestimated.

On the 21st of December, the South African Reserve Bank released its latest leading indictor - showing a rise at a faster pace in October than in September. The leading indictor combines a range of measures, including, among others, manufacturing hours worked, building plans approved and vehicles sold. Michael Belby of the Business Day writes: "After a patchy start to the year, the trend has been solidly upwards". Commenting on SARB's leading indictor, Elna Moolman, group economist at Barnard Jacobs Mellet said "At the beginning of the year, when it started to improve, it was mostly financial market components that boosted it, but by now it is quite broad based. That is very encouraging".

South Africa's inflation rate is expected to ease in 2010. According to the University of Stellenbosch's Bureau for Economic Research, CPI will moderate to 5.7 percent in 2010, down from 7.2 percent in 2009. In the 4th quarter of 2009, there was in increase in Rand Merchant Bank's Bureau of Economic Research business confidence index. JP van der Merwe of TradeInvestSA highlights that this is the first increase since the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The IMF's World Economic Outlook was released in October. The IMF predicts growth of 1.7% for the SA economy in 2010. This is a modest forecast, and while it may seem like a gloomy prediction by the IMF, JP van der Merwe notes the IMF's praise of South Africa for its fiscal policy, future growth prospects and the resilience of South Africa's banking sector.

The 2010 'africapractice survey' was released on the 15th of December. It is a survey of business leaders across Africa. All respondents expected foreign direct investment to rise in 2010. 95% of business leaders expected to grow their businesses in the year ahead. And while many respondents were optimistic about the FIFA World Cup, most felt that the benefits would be limited to South Africa.

I support Jacob Zuma's words:

"The year 2010 must be the year in which for the first time, we all communicate positive messages about our country to the world - the successes and possibilities. We have to put the culture of negativity behind us."

South Africa's economy will face a challenging 2010.

Despite, and in spite of, these challenges, all bets are on

Soccer Coaching - Soccer Skills and Training Lessons From the World Cup

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Below are 6 lessons about soccer skills and soccer training that I learned from the 2010 World Cup:

1. One-Touch Play is Critical in Order to Play Fast. Good soccer players must play fast. There often isn't time for 2-touch. You can use the Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race Practice Game to teach one-touch play.

2. Teach Soccer Players to Block the Ball When they are Running Onto it Near the Goal Rather than Trying a Big Shot. Landon Donovan's goal vs. Algeria is a perfect example. He blocked it into the corner using the inside of his foot - there was NO backswing. The ball had plenty of power because he was running onto it. Think of how many shots went wide over the top because players kicked the ball too hard. Donovan kept his eyes on the ball, ran onto it and blocked it (one-touch) for the goal.

3. What Makes a Great Soccer Goal Scorer? In this World Cup, Klose of Germany and David Villa of Spain were 2 of the best. Both of them are smart players who anticipate where the ball will be and move to the right place. They are persistent, opportunistic and determined. I don't think either of them would win a skills contest, but they know how to score. Klose isn't flashy, but he is very smart.

4. Teach Your Attackers to Stay a Step or 2 Behind the Ball on a Counterattack. If you watched Klose, he would stay a step or 2 behind the ball on a fast counterattack. This gave him 2 advantages: he was less likely to be called offside and he could run onto the ball and block it into the net.

5. All Forwards Should Pressure the Goalkeeper Like David Villa. I was very impressed with David Villa of Spain, not just because of his scoring but because late in the Germany game (75th minute and later) with Spain leading, he kept pressuring the German goalkeeper. That didn't let the German Keeper take his time on punts or kicks off the ground. (Remember, a player can't "harass" the Keeper, but a player can pressure them to pick up the ball). I thought his hustle set an example for his team. At that point he had scored 5 of Spain's 7 goals and had assisted on another, so he was responsible for 6 of the 7 goals, and if he had just stood there like most Forwards no one would have said anything.

6. A Great Dribbler Who Can Break Down the Defense is Very Valuable, BUT He Must Know When to Pass. Messi is the ultimate example. He uses the dribble to set up the pass. He pulls defenders out of position to create space for a teammate and then passes the ball and follows up the shot. Arjen Robben is also a great dribbler and can disrupt defenses, but he has the reputation of sometimes dribbling too much when he should pass.

FIFA World Cup 2010 on You PC - Time to Start Preparing

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are not like me, you must be a football lover. Let me use the words "soccer" and "football" to mean the same thing whether you are from Europe or America. This time around, all attention is focused to South Africa. It's an historic event in the history of this country and Africa as a whole.
Looking at the official Match Schedule as released and published on FIFA's website and the number of the ticket applications received during the first sales phase that ended at midnight on 31 March with a total of 1,635,136 applications, one can begin to imagine the scramble.

The matches will be played in the following towns/areas:

  • Cape Town,

  • Durban,

  • Johannesburg,

  • Mangaung/Bloemfontein,

  • Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth,

  • Nelspruit,

  • Polokwane,

  • Rustenburg,

  • Tshwane/Pretoria.

One sure thing is that the whole world will not be at the pitches, not even all the South Africans. However, everyone that stays back is not necessarily not a lover of football. A good number of reasons account for this. You can start naming from lack of time because of other priorities, finance, and many others. If you are NOT packing your bags, there are other ways to be part of the tournament.

Don't ask me how because I know you certainly have a TV set with foreign channels. If your TV set can't follow you to the office or beach, I think the Internet can do. There are lots and lots of sites out there that will stream live images during the time. Also check the Net for some desktop applications that will bring the event closer to you.

2010 World Cup South Africa - Qualifiers Update

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The road to the 19th World Cup (which as we all know is being held in South Africa in June 2010) is becoming that bit shorter both in terms of knowing who the 32 participating countries will be, and the time that we have to wait for the thrill of the matches to kick off!

Check out our guide to the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers update...

The 2010 World Cup runs for a month and will feature footballing nations from all over the globe competing for the mantle of World Champions. A total of 64 matches will be played at 9 venues throughout the country. The following teams have officially qualified for the most prestigious tournament in the football world, which kicks off on June 11th 2010:

European Qualifiers
Italy (2006 World Champions), Germany, Spain, Denmark, England, Serbia, Switzerland, Slovakia.

African Qualifiers
South Africa (Host Nation), Ivory Coast, Ghana.

South America Qualifiers
Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile

Central America/North America Qualifiers
USA, Mexico, Honduras

Asia/Oceania Qualifiers
Japan, Australia, North Korea, South Korea

There are 9 more places in the tournament up for grabs, and to this end there will be a number of play off matches in the European zone on the 14th and 18th November so as to ascertain the final four European qualifiers. The matches were decided by a draw at FIFA headquarters on the 19th October and are as follows:

France v Republic of Ireland
Russia v Slovenia
Portugal v Bosnia Herzegovina
Ukraine v Greece

Matches to be played on a home and away basis, with aggregate scores to determine the winners.

Three more teams from the African zone have still to qualify, and the final round of qualifying matches will be played in November 2009.

The final place for the Asia/Oceania region will be decided by the play off match between Bahrain and New Zealand.

The final qualifying place at South Africa 2010 will be decided by the match between the 5th place team in the South America zone and the 4th place team in the Central/North American zone. Uruguay will face Costa Rica in a play off match on a home and away basis.

December 4th 2009 sees the World Cup Qualifying draw taking place at the Cape Town Confederation Centre.

The Premier League - The Best League in Europe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Season 2007-2008 saw three of the four semi finalists of the Champions League come from the English Premier League. The other team that was represented from the Premier League was knocked out at the quarter final stage but only by Liverpool, a team from the Premier League! This surely is the proof that the Premier League is without doubt the best league in Europe.

In England people are even stating that as many as six teams from its Premier League should be able to enter into the Champions League as they believe that the majority of the top teams from the rest of Europe would struggle to compete in the Premier League. Where would teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Porto finish in the Premier League if they were to be admitted next season? I would predict that at least one of them would be relegated.

It is not all rosy in the world of English football. The national side has failed to qualify for the upcoming European Football Championship which is a great shame. In a strange way it could actually turn into an advantage as it will give the team longer to prepare for the more important World Cup of 2010. I personally would prefer to be able to watch England this summer as I am confident that the team would be one of the favourites to win the tournament. Poor management from the previous coach Steve McLaren and his backroom staff certainly cost us dear.

The Premier League is likely to only become stronger in the future however managers of the likes of Jose Mourinho (Inter Milan) are sure to want to make an impact.

Teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa would prove too strong for many of the major teams from other European countries.

2010 Paralympic Games

Image : http://www.flickr.com

This exciting event will be held on 12 to 21 March 2010. The impressive Opening Ceremony is sure to enthral spectators, young and old alike. It will be held in the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. Canada has hosted the Paralympics before, in the summer of 1976, and seeks to establish its reputation as a superior Host City, however specialised the requirements.

This event, as with the Olympic Games, gives Vancouver, and Canada as a whole, the prime opportunity to showcase their amenities, hospitality and world-class status as the Host City of such significant events and as a destination for commercial and leisure pursuits.

There will be five different sports on the programme of the 2010 Winter Paralympics. These are 1) Sledge Hockey, 2) Cross-Country Skiing, 3) Alpine Skiing, 4) Wheelchair Curling and 5) a Biathlon. There are specific criteria that are used to define the qualification of the athletes for them to be deemed disabled. Different levels of disability predict which athletes are allocated where.

The venues in which the events will be held include the UBC Sports Centre, the Vancouver Olympic / Paralympic Centre, Whistler Creekside and Whistler Paralympic Park. Each of these had been selected for their capacity as well as for their suitability to host events requiring special adaptations for the athletes. Of course, both the Olympic and the Paralympic venues need to be equipped to accommodate disabled spectators as well, and care has been taken to ensure that these are as accessible and convenient as possible. The Main Media Centre, Whistler Media Centre and Whistler Olympic Celebration Plaza are among the venues that will be used for media conferences and other non-sporting events.

The mascot for the 2010 Winter Paralympics is called Sumi. This figure is a guardian spirit with powerful wings and a Black Bear's strong legs and promises strength and guidance to each of the sportsmen and -women involved in the events.

Vancouver has been preparing for this event in an effort to ensure that both locals and visitors to Canada are catered for in the best way possible. With a host of activities and local attractions apart from the excitement of the games, Vancouver will prove to be the ideal destination for tourists, families, and local residents alike. Its proximity to the United States of America also means that travellers will have access to further destinations at lower travel costs, enabling an all-round touring experience. In addition, an increased number of American residents will be able to attend the Olympics and Paralympics more conveniently and cost-effectively. All of these factors combine to present Vancouver as the exciting and well-equipped Host City for the 2010 Winter Paralympics.
