South Africa - The World Cup in 2010 and So Much More

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the world cup drawing closer and closer, South Africa is fast becoming one of the most talked-about places in the world. What better way to keep the whole family happy in 2010 than by going on a tailor-made holiday which allows fans and non-fans to enjoy an unforgettable experience in this glorious location?

From World Class to Local Heroes

If you are a football fan, then the world cup is undoubtedly stirring up lots of excitement as it draws near. What better way to spend your holiday than to experience it first-hand. With matches taking place in some of the country's most stunning and interesting towns and cities, you can also take time out to do some sight-seeing and enjoy everything that South Africa has to offer. For those who want to experience a calmer view of one of the nation's favourite and most popular sports, then there are plenty of local matches which are well worth seeing too. In fact, you could design your whole holiday experience to make it an entire South African soccer tour.

A Treasured Memento

With World Cup merchandise appearing in all of the shops in South Africa, you could take the opportunity to pick up some fantastic mementos to remind you of your travels and your World Cup 2010 experience. For all those friends and loved ones who couldn't make it there in person, why not pick up some great souvenirs to take back for them too?

Experience the Buzz

Perhaps football is something that doesn't interest you very much and you're looking for a holiday in South Africa which does not revolve around this popular game? If so, then don't be put off by the World Cup frenzy, because with the country pulling out all the stops to make sure that visitors are well taken care of, 2010 is arguably the best time in years to take a holiday to this magnificent place. Whether you are a fan of the sport or not, you won't fail to get caught up in the buzz of excitement as the locals prepare for this exciting event.

The Best of All Worlds

With so much more to offer than just the football, South Africa is a great place to visit this summer whether you are intending to go to the World Cup or not. If you do want to take this wonderful opportunity to cheer on your country, however, then a tailor-made holiday will ensure that you also get to spend some time on the gorgeous beaches, going on exciting safaris and just taking in everything that you can of this stunning place during your stay.

Getting Away From It All

Although there might be millions of people flocking to South Africa this summer for the football, this is one place where there's no need to worry about feeling overcrowded. With so many quiet, out-of-the-way places, you can either avoid the frenzy altogether or dip in and out of it at will. Even at its busiest though, South Africa is still a place where you can just relax and go with the flow, and the local people are always sure to give you a wonderfully warm welcome!

Update January 2010 - South Africa - International Health Insurance

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you looking for Health Insurance coverage in South Africa? There are a plethora of website on the World Wide Web selling health insurance. Companies like Bupa International, Allianz Worldwide Care, ihi Bupa, Global Health and the like, are all International Health Insurance providers. How do you choose a health insurance company?

Before you even begin to look at the product, there are other implications that you need to consider.

Medical cover in South Africa is legislated under the Medical Schemes Act. For many years, there was an ongoing debate (called the Demarcation Debate) surrounding health insurance and medical aid cover.

Generally (this is my opinion), if a company is doing the business of a Medical Scheme in South Africa it needs to be registered as a South African Medical aid (although there is a lot more to this than my generalisation).

Why is this important to the consumer?

(1) If a scheme is registered under the Medical Schemes Act, you as a consumer have recourse through the Medical Schemes Council for issues which could arise (non payment of claims,etc.).

You will not have this recourse on an insurance plan. if you were needing to bring something to the attention of an ombudsman, you would need to do so through the country where the health insurance licence of that provider is held.

(2) Waiting periods on a South African registered scheme.

The maximum (penalty) that a South African Medical aid can impose on someone joining a scheme is a 3 month general waiting period and a 12 month condition specific waiting period.

Generally, a scheme would only apply these penalties when you already have a condition upon joining a scheme. This is one of the ways that a scheme can manage their risk pool.

On an Insurance product, you could be denied cover for that condition. Or, another way for an insurance company to manage risk would be to deny more comprehensive cover once you have a condition and applied for more cover. A lot of the products also have built in waiting periods before you can use certain of the cover (pregnancy for instance would be pretty standard to have a waiting period for cover when joining a scheme).

(3) Late Joiner Penalties on a South African registered Medical Scheme.

Late joiner penalties can be applied to someone who is over the age of 35 joining a South African medical aid. In short, this is a penalty applied if you haven't been part of registered South African Scheme. It works on the number of years over the age of 35 that you have not belonged to a scheme.

(4) Prescribed Minimum Benefits.

There are over 270 conditions and about 25 of them are chronic where a medical scheme needs to provide cover at cost. This is not a requirement for a health insurance plan as they are not registered South African medical aid schemes.

(5) The Broker

You do not have to go through a broker to join a medical scheme in South Africa...you are allowed to go directly to the scheme and apply. Obviously, as the plans have become more and more complex, the better option is to go through an accredited broker.

You would need an exemption issued by the Medical Schemes Council to be able to sell International Health Insurance plans in South Africa. So make sure that your broker is

registered with the Council of Medical Schemes if he is selling you any medical type product (other than travel insurance).

(6) How do the different plans pay claims?

Medical aids (not traditional medical aid schemes) will usually pay a provider based on a rate...i.e. a Discovery Health rate, a Momentum Health rate, etc.

This is probably where the biggest advantage of health insurance is...generally, they will pay based on actual cost...so if a doctor charges R12000, they would generally pay the R12000.

Why do people join International Health Insurance Plans in South Africa?

(a) For international medical cover.

(b) for simplicity...the health insurance plans are less complicated than medical aids, where rates are applied, etc.

(C) Language...if you are a foreign national and don't speak much English, a lot of the international health insurance companies have call centres where the staff speak other languages.

These are the basic difference between a local medical aid and international health insurance.

Please note that a local South African who is not travelling may not buy a international health insurance plan.

2010 World Cup in South Africa

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As the world awaits the Fifa world cup 2010 with bated breath, none could be more excited than the host nation, South Africa. With this being the first FIFA world cup that would be held in an African nation, it's actually the whole continent which hopes for a stupendous performance from the South Africans. In what had been an all African bidding process, South Africa had won the rights for the most coveted international tournament in the world from Morocco and Egypt. The tournament as has been expected has been generating a lot of hype and people from all over the world are pouring into the African nation to get a glimpse of the present day legends of football.

On its part, South Africa, too has left no stone unturned in making this Cup an event to remember for times to come. There has been the construction of five new stadiums especially for the purpose of the competition. Apart from this, there are five other existing venues which would be upgraded and the cost for all the ten stadiums stands at a staggering figure of 48 billion Rouble. In addition to the stadiums, the country has been trying to improve its notorious public transport system as well which has been known to be conspicuous. Some of the steps in this direction include the Gautrain and the Bus Rapid Transit System.

Although the Copa de Mundo is going to showcase some of the best in the world of football, there would be some of the biggies who would be missing the show due to injuries. Some of the names that are expected to brighten up the tournament with their presence and eclectic and blazing performances include Brazil's Kaka, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Andrea Pirlo and the latest sensation Cristiano Ronaldo.

The world cup too has started seeing commercialisation to the full extent with there being dedicated space for the world cup video game on their official site. From an official song to specific balls, the event has been made as exclusive as possible by the concerned authorities. The FIFA federation too has been quite happy with the performance and preparations of South Africa and their contention can be seen from the fact that they have rated their preparations up to date as 8 on a scale of 10. They expect that whatever is left, would be completed before the world cup commences. And that is what everyone else is waiting for too, the commencement!

67 Minutes of Positive Thought on South Africa

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela.

On the 18th of July 2010 Nelson Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday. South Africans have been asked to give 67 minutes to uplifting South Africa on this day. At the time of writing this I find myself sitting on a plane a few thousand kilometers above this wonderful country of which I am so proud of, thinking of a way in which I can pay tribute to this man with my 67 minutes. And so, I realized that I could spend the next 67 minutes writing this post and giving thought to all the things that South Africa has done for me, and meant to me over the years, in the hope that it will do the same for those who read it.

Firstly, it's important to note that Nelson Mandela is an idol of mine. Many years ago, I was asked during a Life-line Personal growth course, "who is your idol?". This question raised some anxiety in me. I was against idolizing any human being. We all have flaws and we all contribute to this world, however small. However, instead of saying I don't have one, out from the back of my mind I realized I did have an idol, and I found myself saying mine was Nelson Mandela. The reason for this is largely based on his ability to forgive. One of the hardest traits to master of our humanness is forgiveness. Our ego usually gets in the way. We have been schooled and brought up with the notion of fairness. Those who do wrong will therefore never succeed and the scales will be balanced. All to often, we feel we are the one who should administer the balance of the scales. No one has taught forgiveness by example more for South Africa than Nelson Mandela. I was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity in 1994 of meeting him in person and sharing a few words.

During the late eighties and early nineties many South Africans fled our beautiful shores based on a fear of South Africa's future. Today they still carry with them something they will never lose, an affinity and joy for all things South African, and a part of their cultural makeup. I was studying at the time and remained optimistic about the potential future that hung in the balance. Could we pull this unified nation off? Looking back over all those years, I think the answer is an overwhelming yes. The people of South Africa have done this, and the leadership of Nelson Mandela guiding us through those early years of transition contributed a major part to this success.

And so, here I am, giving thought to what it means to me to be a South African.

To me it means:

* Being proud of what has been achieved over the past 16 years.
* Being free to express the part of my culture that makes me uniquely South African. A combination of heritage and an ever-evolving aspect of my present daily interactions.
* Immense pride at our World Class world cup achievement.
* Opportunity. As an entrepreneur in South Africa, I see awesome ability and great market opportunity. We can both contribute and take part in the global economy.
* Beauty. Our land holds awesome beauty. I have yet to see a country that holds as much diversity and splendor as ours.
* Technology. We have first world technology. Yes we could always have faster bandwidth, but hey I work from Greyton with an ADSL connection and feel as connected as if I was working in a big city.
* Energy. In our people and in the earth. South Africans have a reputation as being great workers overseas. We have an innate spirit of energy and it spills over into all that we do.
* Resilience. South Africans bounce back when adversity strikes. Not only in business but also in our personal lives, our history has taught us to continue when the going get tough.
* Our Sun. Our weather creates positivity. From the crisp sunny winter days in Johannesburg to the glorious windless summer days of Cape Town in February. The rain brings sustenance and the sun energy for our country to grow.

This land, the people, and the leaders, all have had a part to play in getting us to where we are today. Nelson Mandela was one of the first torchbearers in this relatively short journey we have been on so far. These 67 minutes have shown me that I have so much to be thankful for as a South African. I hope they have inspired your thoughts to thankfulness instead of criticism. To joy instead of fear. To hope instead despair. Lets celebrate the positivity of our country with Nelson Mandela as we wish him health and happiness for the years ahead.

Who Will Win FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010? A Tarot's View

Image : http://www.flickr.com

June 2010 is here and all the soccer lovers are supporting their teams with full love energy and enthusiasm. Every Soccer fan has a question in their minds "Will their country lift the FIFA World Cup 2010?" Everyone is guessing the future, and thus we wanted to see what tarot cards say about the future of Soccer World Cup 2010's teams. We don't know yet but we may see Brazil vs England World Cup 2010 Final. Let's say what tarot cards say about these Soccer Teams namely, Argentina, Brazil, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands.

Argentina: Tarot cards say that Argentina's team carries the energies of a moving force both physically and emotionally. Somehow there is a big hint of financial problems for the team, which means that they may not make it to final. Cards also indicate that these financial worries will smooth out soon but very slowly, which further tells us that this team may enter quarterfinals/Semi Finals stage but chances of winnings are not huge. If they really want to be in the Final and win the show, they need to apply huge amount of effort. Also they will need to be 100% sure that they do not miss a single opportunity. Tarot reading says that team players are not willing to change in the given circumstance, which they need to work on towards meeting their goals.

Brazil: Tarot cards say that Brazil's team will have a lot of Money in their pocket plus huge recognition and fame. The series may not start well but as the series will go on things will come together for Brazil and start falling into places. Luck will have its hand as well, which will take this team to new heights. The team will have to work as one and enjoy the fruit of their labour. New players will be very useful for the team, specially players between the age of 21-30 with quick mind. All thumbs up for Brazil, looks like they are in final with huge chance of winning the tournament.

England: Tarot Cards say that England's team have will have great surprises and that too pleasant ones. Are they making it to the Finals? We say "Maybe yes!" Tarot Reading indicates that the team will be making good strategies and work with proper planning in each game. There are prizes and honours indicated in the cards, success in the foreign land which is South Africa. The Intellectual Boss/Coach is going to play a major part in the team's success. There is good amount of Money coming their way even after the tournament with new contracts on the way. Again thumbs are up for England and again looks like Brazil they also have good chance to make it to final and winning the tournament.

Germany: Tarot cards say Germany's Team may not make it to finals as there are confusions and double mindedness shown in the card. The players may miss opportunities to score the goals because of this issue, which means they may miss the pass or headers at the right time. There is frustration in the team's efforts and despite their efforts they are a bit doubtful in their hearts. They will need to look straight at their goals or we must say opponent's Goals. They must not lose their hopes and keep their calm. If they bring calmness to their team then and only then the Good fortune will strike them and Something Good Might happen. Money is hemmed between the troubles and worries. So far we believe they will not make the Finals of FIFA World Cup 2010.

Italy; Tarot cards say that Italy's team will go on the right path in this series. But they have to be really careful with their planning because unless they will not put their plans into action they may find it very difficult to enter the finals. They also need to choose the players very carefully and consider all the possibilities before forming the team and must not overlook the players. Skills are more important here than the names. There are lots of joys in the card which means that team will have lots of success but the money is not there and thus we believe that this team may make towards semi finals/quarterfinals.

Spain: Tarot cards say Spain's team have very less chances to make it to the top. The team is not sure about their strengths and weaknesses and are very much reliant on luck as well. Efforts and efforts are indicated and the success will come in different form. The luck will although favour them in the tournament but they will always have fear of failure in their minds. If they can overcome this problem they may go a bit further.

Netherlands: Tarot Cards says Netherland's team will be saving their energies for the right time to strike. There is a hint of selfishness in the team which may mean that there can be change of mind of passing the ball to a player or just trying to hit the goal themselves. The players need to work as a team and believe that only one player is playing and that is their country. The chances are finals are very less. Lots of efforts are needed.

The Tarot cards according to above discussion indicate that four teams look promising namely Brazil, England, Italy and Argentina. These teams look like going towards the top ranks. These teams had most favourable Tarot card Readings and thus we have come to such a conclusion. We believe we have not hurt anyone's feelings regarding the possible outcome with the Tarot views towards FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010. Rest all is in the hands of God. We wish best of luck to all the teams and also want all teams to remember there is only one Goal, opponents Goal.

Who Will Win World Cup 2010?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The World Cup 2010 finals in South Africa are almost upon us as June approaches and now much of the attention will be turned onto it with domestic leagues across Europe winding down their seasons. Fans will start wondering who will win the World Cup 2010 trophy and already most of the favourites named are the countries that have met with success in the past. Many of them are past winners or continental champions such as England, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Italy while others like Ivory Coast are hoping to upstage the bigger lights.

The question of which team is capable of lifting the World Cup 2010 trophy can be difficult to answer. There are too many countries that will bring some of the most talented players in the world to the tournament. It is also a competition that has constantly thrown up many surprises in days gone by and nobody can really take results for granted. The climate situation in South Africa where the games will be staged will also be an unknown as it will be the first time the World Cup finals are played in wintry conditions. This may prove a stumbling block for the countries not used to it such as those from different time zones like Europe and Asia where they are experiencing summer times in their continents at the same time.

Spain are emerging as one of the teams that many experts are tipping to become world champions for the first time. After winning Euro 2008, the Spanish national side has become the darling of football purists for their commitment to the beautiful game. They have no shortage of world renowned players like Fernando Torres, Iniesta, Xavi and David Villa who are all in demand by every club that can afford them while many other quality players cannot even make their first eleven. They may now appear to be the complete team that can go all the way but caution has to be used in backing them to go all the way. Spain have not won the World Cup previously for a mental weakness that many thought had been banished with their Euro victory but which reared its ugly head in last year's Confederation Cup. If they are to repeat that display, it may lead to more regret and disappointment in South Africa.

No list of favourites for the World Cup can be complete without mentioning South American giants Brazil. The current incarnation under manager Dunga may not provide the entertaining and magical attacking football that fans crave for but they are built solidly and have winning as their priority. The list of players trusted and selected by the coach are also no pushovers in terms of individual ability. Kaka and Robinho can easily walk into any top club with their dribbling and attacking skills but Dunga's credit has been to bring together all these talented individuals into one cohesive unit. The manager has already called on fans to back the team even if they dislike him due to his penchant to forgo the country's tradition of samba soccer in search of results which the public also craves as much.

Fabio Capello has been tipped to turn England from also-rans into true contenders this time. Under the watchful eye of the disciplinarian, the English players have shedded their prima donna ways to play with greater team ethic. There is some semblance to what Manchester United evolved into under Sir Alex Ferguson as the Scot held a fearful grip over the players but it inspired them equally to achieve unprecedented success. Capello is a similar manager with England players having spoken of their fear and respect for the Italian. His desire for results and order is manifested in the form of Wayne Rooney - a young striker who has become the talisman of the England side. Rooney bears the hopes of a footballing nation on his shoulders at the World Cup 2010 finals and if he can avoid injury and play true to form, there are very defenders who can keep a lid on the player. Capello and England will be hoping for that end and the transformation has also led to many experts to name them as possible contenders for the tournament prize.

Spain, Brazil and England are but three of the many contenders who have the potential to win the 2010 World Cup. Due to the form these teams have been in prior to the tournament finals, their chances may also be slightly better compared to other teams like Germany and Argentina. However, form is but one factor that will decide who emerges from the heap when the final comes around on July 11th. If it were only down to form and quality, previous World Cups would have been entirely predictable but they have never been that way. While the smaller nations like South Korea and Denmark may never go all the way except in a fairy tale, they can rest assured that they start on level footing with the rest of the participating teams. That is the magic of the World Cup and why football remains the most popular sport in the world.

Accommodation Still Available at Safari Lodges in South Africa - FIFA World Cup 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Good news... there is still accommodation available at several Big Five private Safari Lodges in South Africa. After consulting with a range of safari lodges and obtaining their booking schedules (which are changing on a daily basis), it is clear that there is still availability. At this point in time many safari lodges still have some available lodgings, ranging from several 3 night openings to one of the smaller lodges having taken no bookings at all and being open to negotiate a block booking (accommodation for 24 persons) for the entire World Cup period!

Even better news... many of the smaller lodges have not hiked their prices at all during the FIFA World Cup period. In fact, several lodges have even retained their low season special rates during this period!!! This is in sharp contrast to many hotels and guest houses where prices have been raised beyond belief (up to 10 times the normal tariff) and football enthusiasts can expect to pay in the region of R5,000 per night for a double room! In tough economic times, such "flash in the pan" tactics tend to be counter-productive. Every tourist wants to go home feeling they've had value for money and a worthwhile experience! We would like them to come back, after all.

So... great news for any football fans who already have their World Cup tickets. It may be far more affordable to stay in a Big Five Safari Lodge than in a hotel or guest house. What could be better? Why come all the way to South Africa and miss the opportunity of a unique safari experience?

When planning your accommodation, the location of the stadiums is an important consideration. Some safari lodges based in Mpumalanga and Gauteng are ideally situated for matches at Soccer City, Loftus Versfeld, Royal Bafokeng and the Peter Mokaba Stadiums. Lodges in the Greater Kruger Park are perfect stopovers for matches at Mbombela in Nelspruit.

Italy Soccer Team - The Azzurri Team

2010 FIFA World Cup Match Reviews - South Africa Versus Mexico

Image : http://www.flickr.com

After the gala opening ceremony at Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, Mexico kicked off against South Africa. "Bafana Bafana," although supported by over 80,000 spectators and playing on home turf, started as underdogs against the 2009 CONCACAF champions. South Africa played in their traditional yellow shirts, green shorts and yellow socks, while the Mexicans donned their new dark green kit. Just to avoid defeat would have been a good result for South Africa and they did just that, managing a 1-1 draw with Mexico after taking a surprise lead.

Ravshan Irmatov from Uzbekistan got the match underway, with Mexico taking the kick-off. The Mexicans started brightly, playing in their usual manner. They maintained possession of the ball, playing regular short passes to work on the patience of the South Africans. In the first few minutes, they tested the South African's defence with some good crosses outside of the penalty area.

South Africa settled after the opening ten minutes and was able to interrupt the smooth flow of the Mexicans, even though the CONCACAF champions dominated ball possession. South Africa managed to carve out a couple of good chances in the first half. However, at the end of the first half the game was goalless despite the chances created by either side.

In the second half, South Africa started more positively and there was more balance in the flow of play. The Mexicans played a higher defensive line as they searched for the opening goal. However, their high defensive line left them vulnerable to a counter-attack. In the 55th minute of the game, Siphiwe Tshabalala exploited this vulnerability with a defence-splitting run on a swift counter-attack that started just after the halfway line. His clinical strike at the end of that run beat goalkeeper Oscar Perez from the left side of the penalty area to hit the corner of the net; South Africa had a surprising 1-0 lead.

Bafana Bafana coach Alberto Parreira adopted a defensive posture at that point, using the counter-attack and getting several players behind the ball when Mexico was in possession. The Mexicans found it difficult to break through and coach Javier Aguirre sought to get inspiration by introducing veteran striker Cuatemoc Blanco in the latter stages of the match. Blanco struck took the corner that eventually resulted in a Mexican equalizer. In the 79th minute, defender Rafael Marquez controlled the ball just outside the goal area and placed his shot past Itumeleng Khune in goal to shake the onion bag.

While the Mexicans pressed for the winner, South Africa came close to victory from a counter-attack that was similar to Tshabalala's opening. This time, midfielder Katlego Mphela struck the upright after beating Oscar Perez. Mexico dominated possession 65% - 35% and had more shots on goal than the home side. However, that domination did not translate to victory. In the end, it was a far result for both teams in a match contested in the right spirit. The Uzbekistan referee did not have to make any controversial calls and he showed only four yellow cards - two to each side.

Both sides would require better defensive work and finishing while South Africa should be concerned about their ball possession. Nevertheless, this result ensured that Mexico and South Africa would have a chance of qualifying in their final group matches of Group A.

Why the 2010 World Cup Will Be So Influential

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The 2010 World Cup is only four months away.

On a continent where soccer is a daily activity, played by all ages, and held high in the hearts and minds of all Africans, I cannot think of a better place for such a grand tournament to be hosted.

From the villages, to the townships, into the heart of the nation's capital, soccer is a daily activity.

Deep in the northern Namibian bush of Uukwaluudhi, the village in which I lived for over two years, soccer was a daily activity. Creativity thrived with the groups of children and the most important thing was never if they had an actual soccer ball to play with, rather the MOST important thing was the game itself.

Whether the ball was the size of a tennis ball, made of several wrapped plastic bags, or old rolled up socks, the game played on.

Mothers and grandmothers fought the children to take a breather from the game to complete their daily chores of herding livestock. All the boys wanted to do was play soccer.

Fields were abstract. Goal posts were wooden sticks gathered from the forest. Very few shoes were worn, and the idea of shin pads and green fields -well forget about it. Yet the passion and spirit for the game could not be broken.

Between classes, before and after school, in the mornings and afternoons, after a meal or while hungry, the kids found a way to play the game.

Where there is a will, there is a way and in that way there was purpose to be found.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa could perhaps be the most energetic, exciting places to host this international event. Thousands from around the globe will attend, celebrate, and mourn, the loss, or win, of their home teams.

African children will be kickin' a makeshift ball in the townships imagining they were Ronaldo playing in the large stadiums and being cheered on by thousands. They will be creating their own celebrity.

These children are inspiring and this is motivating.

If there is anything that shines upon the World Cup 2010, it's that it will continue to allow young African children to run with their imagination and create their own reality, inspired by the best soccer players in the world.

Be inspired by the World Cup's future stars and be inspired to be thankful for what you have, as you're never too old to quit imagining and creating. If you don't somebody else will!
