Fahrenheit 2010 - 52min Documentary

See Full Film Here: journeyman.booserver.com This uncompromising investigation asks what the World Cup really means for South Africans. Who actually stands to benefit from the millions of dollars invested? And what will South Africa be left with after the trophy is lifted and the applause dies down? The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa! - the announcement was received with deafening peals of applause. Promises were made that the people would reap the rewards. And the publicity machine went into overdrive. Fifa expects to make $25 billion out of the television rights alone. Advertising space was sold off to VISA, Budweiser, Telkom and countless othersand giant white elephants sprouted up all over South Africa. A world full of greed, self-interest and self-promotion had arrived. South Africans are passionate about football. This will be a very noisy world cup. Not only are South Africans willing to work on the Stadium for a pittance, but most of the South African fans wont be able to see the football at all. Fifa said we cant have stadiums near shacks, we cant show the world this kind of poverty . So construction began in Johannesburg rather than the more popular choice, Athlone. A giant 95 000 capacity stadium was erected right next to an existing stadium, justified by the coming Olympics, which South Africa also hopes to host. Even Archbishop Desmond Tutu says that its well worth the price. People have to understand that the commitment of resources to 2010 will ...

The World's Worst Soccer Teams - Cuba

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Golden Age

Once upon a time Cuba was one of the best teams in the Americas. By the early 1930s, the Island finished first at the I Central and Caribbean Games. They defeated Costa Rica and Honduras. Subsequently, between July 4 and July 19, 1938, Cuba's national soccer team became the best Caribbean team in soccer history when they placed seventh at the Third FIFA World Championship in Paris, France's capital city. During that event, Cuba had defeated Romania. However the Island was not see again in the World Cup.

Country Profile: Cuba

This Spanish-speaking nation is located in the Caribbean Sea. It covers 42,800 square miles; Latin America's largest individual island. There are at least 12 million people. Havana is the country's capital. Politically, Cuba is a dictatorship.

Since 1959 Cuba, formerly a colony of Spain, has become a Marxist dictatorship. In practice the Island is governed by Castro's family. Hereafter, the nation's dictator Fidel Castro Ruz was elected as the first pro-Soviet leader in the Western Hemisphere. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the USSR (now Russia) provided heavy military and economic aid.

Unfortunately it is one of the most brutal human rights abusing states in the Third World since the 1950s. Due to this, the Cuban tyranny is an international pariah on the world stage, along with Iran, Zimbabwe, Burma and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (also known as North Korea). According Reports Without Borders, Cuba is one of "15 enemies of the internet on Earth". For political and economical reasons, over 250 athletes, including Olympic champs, had left the country since 1990, the highest of the world's developing nations. Economically, it has become heavily dependent on Venezuelan aid since the 2000s.

FIFA World Cup

Cuba's national team has not qualified for the FIFA World Cup since 1938. In recent decades, many Caribbean and Central American nations, from El Salvador and Honduras to Haiti and Trinidad Tobago, have already outpaced Cuba. By the early 1970s, the Salvadoran team was the winner of the men's soccer CONCACAF Tournament and because of this it was one of the 16 teams in the FIFA championship in Mexico City. Hereafter, twelve years on, El Salvador, along with Honduras, took part in its second men's World Cup in Barcelona (Spain). For the first time in 44 years, Haiti, a virtual unknown before 1974, secured its place in soccer history when they competed at the X World Cup in Munich, West Germany. From 1990 on, Costa Rica has participated twice in the global event. At the FIFA 2002 tournament, the Central Americans finished 19th place (among 32 teams).

Unlike neighboring Cuba, Jamaica qualified for the World Cup in the late 1990s. The Jamaican squad placed 22nd in the FIFA championship, ahead of Scotland, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Subsequently, Trinidad & Tobago, a cricket-loving Island, participated at the 2006 World Cup. Meanwhile, Honduras has qualified for the South Africa 2010. Honduras, one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere, made its World Cup debut in the early 1980s.

From 1962 until the late 1980s, sports in Cuba had suffered an abrupt change when the USSR and other Marxist states sent up to 300 coaches to the Island. Also during that period, the Spanish-speaking nation received more money per capita to promote sports than any other nation on Earth, including South Korea, China and Greece. At the same time, several soccer coaches came to Cuba, from Hungarians to Soviets. In the meantime, the Marxist government sent a host of national squads to Eastern Europe, North Korea and the Soviet Union. Havana also hosted many international tournaments. But despite all of this, the Cuban soccer team did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup. But that was only the beginning of the tragedy.

A Nightmare

From the 1990s to the 2000s, only a handful of soccer players did not escape from Cuba. By the early 1990s, Fernando Griñan, one of the Island's most popular players, sought political asylum in abroad. But Griñan wasn't the only one. By 1998 Eduardo Sebrango fled Cuba to Canada. Shortly afterwards, Alberto Delgado y Perez and Rey Angel Martinez defected from its national team during the 20o2 Gold Cup in the States. Three years later, Maykel Galindo escaped from the Island. Likewise, between 2007 and 2008, Osvaldo Alonso, Lester More, Pedro Faife and Reinier Alcantara had left Havana. In March 2008, seven players sought political asylum in America: Manuel Miranda, Erlys Garcia, Yenier Bermudez, Yordany Alvarez, Loanny Duarte, Yendri Diaz, and Eder Roldan. As a result, Cuba failed to qualify for the 2010 South Africa.

Chelsea Loses to Inter Milan at San Siro

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Chelsea last night lost by 1-2 to Inter Milan at the San Siro in the UEFA champions league group of 16. Though Chelsea had better ball possession and higher number of shots on target, Inter won the match because they were able to convert their chances.

The first goal of the match came barely three minutes into the first half when Milito connected a pass by Samuel Eto'o to put the host ahead. Thereafter it was attack and counter attack till the end of the first half. Chelsea lost two great opportunities in the first half; first was Didier Drogba's terrific free kick that hit the upright bar and the second was the penalty which the centre referee overlooked when Salomon Kalou was brought down in the Inter's 18 yard box in the 45th minute. First half ended 1-0 in favour of the home team.

The second half saw a more purposeful football on both sides as they kept threatening each other's defense from time to time. Chelsea's persistent attacks paid off in the 51st minute when Salomon Kalou powered home a pass from Ivanovic to even scores at 1-1. However, determined not to lose at home the host fought gallantly and got their winning goal in the 55th minute when Cambiasso blast in a grounder after a goal mouth scramble, leaving goal keeper Petr Cech puzzled. Chelsea mounted more pressure but all their efforts were thwarted by Inter's water-tight defense line.

Goal Petr Cech got injured in the 59th minute after jumping to catch a non-threatening up ball that was actually not goal bound. He got replaced with Henrique Hilario who kept a clean slate for the rest of the match.

Chelsea once again had another opportunity to equalize but the opportunity was wasted by Frank Lampard who in the 65th minute gave Nicolas Anelka's cross to Inter's goal keeper as though it were a back pass. The blues gave a very good account of themselves anyway; they were able to get an away goal that could decide Inter's fate in their return leg match in three weeks time.

Samuel Eto'o got replaced in the 67th minute while Salomon Kalou the scorer of Chelsea's lone goal was replaced with Sturridge in the 78th minute. Sturridege's inclusion did not do much to change the tempo of the game. The host eventually ran away with a 2-1 victory: Coach Jose Mourinho was obviously happy with the result having boasted before the match that he was going to beat Chelsea.

The 11 Best Performing Stocks of the 2000's - A Guide For Savvy Investors

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With so much of thrill, excitement and gloom, we have said goodbye to the last decade. There were a lot of events that called for the set back of stock markets. After the bubble burst of tech to its crash, natural calamities like Katrina, attack of 9/11 and then the worst global recession since 1930's, were some of the events that not only hurt the sentiments of people but also affected the stock markets badly.

As we have entered a new decade, there are a lot of hopes that world economy will resume to its original shape and will start growing with a boost. With such hopes, enthusiastic investors welcomed year 2010 and powered the New Year rally to extend. However, there are several wise investors who want to play really smart and well. Why not, investing wisely is the key to success. For such curious investors, given below is a guide of best stocks of 2000's that performed really well. During the toughest financial times these stocks not only readily recovered from the set-backs but outperformed the entire market.

Medifast (MED) - even during the recent economic downfall, there is one particular sector that survived and retained its health is the healthcare or pharmaceutical sector. Medifast from diet and weight loss emerged as the clear winner and registered its name for title of remarkable player of 2000's. With tremendous growth rate of 9,244% during the last decade, Med left the second best performing stock by 1,300%. A major share of credit for this huge success of Med goes to its diet programs and similar weight loss products.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR)
The last decade proved to be really shiny for this caffeine giant. Green Mountain astonished the entire market with the growth rate of 7,895% for the decade, as reported by Business Insider. With this massive growth, Green Mountain is now dominating the stock market with its shares trading at $ 70 per share while it started only at $ 1 per share in year 2000. This huge success of Mountain is the outcome of the acquisition deal in which Mountain bought Wakefield, Mass.-based Keurig Inc., in year 2006 for $ 104 million. Keurig is now known for the company with single cup brewing. Burlington Free Press said, "If you bought stock in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters a decade ago, you're sitting pretty today." During fiscal 2009 Keurig licensed roasters attain the mark the K-cup shipment 63% up over 2008.

Hansen Natural (HANS)
Following the pathway of risk management as a growth strategy, this beverage company, Hansen Natural posted the 6,504% growth rate since the last decade and backed the title of third-best performing stock of 2000's. The best part of the story for Hansen is that unlike other companies of the same industry, it does not have any operating business of its own. The perfect financial combination of low risk high reward fueled the huge success in Hansen from 2005 onwards.

Bally Technologies (BYI)
Despite of a strong set back in the gambling industry since the recession strike economy, Bally Technologies, the online gambling giant, pre-eminently sustained well. During 2008, shares of Bally dipped a lot but then it rebounded. With the long history of acquisitions, mergers and divestitures, Bally posted 6,395% growth rate for the decade. The credit for this growth rate goes to the company's shrewd acquisitions and efforts to releasing new products continuously.

Southwestern Energy Co (SWN)
Southwestern Energy Co has set an example that the productivity of a determined company cannot be challenged by the powerful events that keep the potential to shake up the economies. Despite of ending the trading at paltry $ 0.82 per share in 1999, this oil and natural gas producer managed to bring its share price to $ 45.75 per share by the end of December 2009. For the decade, this company managed to post the total returns of 5,781% while the increment rate in its share price for the decade is 5,684%. Company is planning further expansion and has several plans for year 2010. As reported by Business Week, SWN has, "increased its 2010 capital budget and projected a 36 percent growth in production, as the company looks to expand its exploration and production activity in the coming year." The reason behind their brilliant growth success is the low cost operations and financial flexibility.

Amedisys (AMED)
Amedisys, the famous provider for alternate-site health care services has made its way from bottom to top and got itself entitled for the best performing stocks of the last decade. It provides home health services to aging American population. Amedisys' total growth rate for the time period 2000-2009 is 3,669.20%. Over 85 % of its growth came from Medicare only. Due to changed government policy, Amedisys served the rapidly increasing aging population and this is the reason it grew with the right pace and at right time. The growth of the company started 2004 onwards when in late 2003 medicare reform became law. Prior to this, AMED shares were at all time low of $ 20 per share.

Deckers Outdoor (DECK)
The soaring popularity of hot brand UGG boots of footwear manufacturer took its share price skyrocketing. A major share of credit to the extensive growth of Decker's Outdoor for the last decade goes to UGG boots only. The posted growth rate of DECK for time frame 2000-2009 is 3,669%. According to the Los Angeles Times, another driving force that led the company's prominent growth is decision that was taken in late 90's to switch "the primary focus of the footwear company to the international market as the catalyst, concluding that, what stared as a small enterprise to clad the feet of Australian surfers now seems intent on world domination."

Terra Nitrogen (TNH)
Implementing a policy that focused on a primary strategy to cater to the high demands better than competition, resulted as the impressive factor for the growth of this Nitrogen fertilizer producer and distributer, Terra Nitrogen. TNH has surged 3,611 % for 2000-2009. Terra has managed to average a 70% return on capital since the year 2006.

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers (JOSB)
For the last decade, this retailer and designer of men clothing has posted the growth of 3,419%. Jos. A. Bank has made its place in the list of best performing stocks of decade in Business Insider. Despite of vicious recession, JOSB has outperformed in 2009. However, the share price of Jos. A. Bank remained low until late 2003.

XTO Energy Inc. (XTO)
In year 2009, XTO Energy Inc. had got all the reason to remain in headlines. In year 2000, XTO acquired two companies while with the end of last decade Exxon Mobil bought it for whopping $ 31 billion. It posted the growth rate of 3,461% from 2000-2009. In year 2007, XTO acquired more than 1 trillion cubic feet of oil and gas reserves in the Rocky Mountains and Dominion Resources, for which it paid $2.5 billion. However, XTO earned the title of largest natural gas producer in US after it paid $4.2 billion to acquire Hunt Petroleum Corporation.

DaVita Inc. (DVA)
DaVita, the famous kidney care company in U.S. has taken its share price $59.60 per share in December 2009 as compared to $5 per share in year 1999. This massive growth rate of 1,200% and 1,236% in share price helped it get enlisted in best performing stocks. DaVita's success lies in their extreme corporate leadership.

As we have stepped into a new decade, the potential investors will look back at the top performing stocks for the last decade. The article files all those top stocks with reasons of their success.

The Different Types of Soccer Training That Enhances Players' Performance

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the most competitive sports, soccer also has the maximum fan following across the world. Soccer is perhaps the most demanding of all sports. In fact, the FIFA world cup is the most widely shown and viewed tournament in the world and attracted approximately 715.1 million people to watch the 2006 FIFA finals.

But what makes soccer so attractive and competitive? It is a combination of players and their performance and the game itself. 22 players and 2 teams face each other and give a power-packed performance for 90 minutes to decide the winner. You can well imagine the kind of soccer training required by players to give top performance through the 90 minutes and sometimes beyond that as well.

Modern Soccer and Training

Over the years, soccer has become far more competitive and the deciding factor is high performance. The only way players can produce high performance is through proper training as well as conditioning. The FIFA world cup is not just the only tournament, there is the UEFA championship; there are the local league championships, the European Cup, and the Pan-American cup championship as well.

In order to play in any type of soccer game, a player has to be completely fit and show stamina and running skills. Research conducted has revealed that players cover almost 8-12km during a single game of soccer. The 8-12km includes 36% jogging, 24% walking, 20% coursing, 11% sprinting, 7% backward movements, and 2% ball possession movements. The research also indicated that it induces an average intensity that is close to the lactate threshold, which is approximately 80-90% of the maximum human heart rate. Hence, without proper training and conditioning a player would collapse in the field or during the game.

Soccer Training Period

Ideally, the training period should be for 12 months but due to local games and championship participation, the maximum available time is 8 months. High standard soccer training is split up into 4 phases and they are:

1. Pre-season training - Early Season
2. Pre-season training - Late Season
3. During season training
4. Off-season training

Some of the essential aspects and a must have in soccer training for professionals as well as amateurs are:

Endurance Training: Endurance training should ideally start with low intensity aerobic conditioning in the first 2-3 weeks. This should be followed by rigorous interval training all the way into the late pre-season.

Strength Training: Strength training should focus on Anatomical Adaptation (AA), Maximum Strength (MxS) and conversion to Power/Power Endurance (P/PE). This type of training should last for a period of 3-10 weeks. Players can use barbells, light weight implements, medicine balls, dumbbells, and numerous other strength or weight training machines during this period.

Speed and Power Training: This type of training is conducted during the late pre-season as well as in-season. Speed training focuses on quick acceleration and high speed endurance.

Flexibility & Skill training: This type of soccer training is imparted to players during the in-season and is an important driver of on-field performance.

The bottom line is that soccer training is necessary at all levels to provide enhanced performance on the field.

The world cup of 1992 was one of the most memorable ever. It was the first world cup to be played under artificial lights, colored clothing and the white ball. However this was also a world cup marred by a stupid rain rule. In an effort to make the calculation of the target simpler, in case of the match being shortened due to rain interruptions, the organizers really botched it up with the most ridiculous rule ever. The absurdity of this rule was not realized until after the matches began and the rules actually implemented. We are featuring one such match now. It was also the first and only World Cup where the teams were not split into group and hence was conducted in a round robin fashion.

India came into the world cup on the back of an abysmal tour of Australia. They had lost the test series 4-0 and were comprehensively beaten in the final of a triangular tournament by the host, with West Indies being the other team. The world cup was being conducted at the fag end of that tour and the Indian team seemed to be devoid of motivation. Before meeting the Australians, India had already lost to England and their match against Sri Lanka was rained out.

Australia on the other hand came into the world cup as the firm favorites to lift the tournament in their own backyard. However they started poorly and came into the match against India having lost both their opening matches to New Zealand and South Africa.

Allan Border won the toss and elected to bat. They started really badly. They were at 2 for 38 at one stage when Dean Jones joined David Boon and began the recovery. The two took the score to 102 with some breath taking running between the wickets. After Boon fell for 43, Jones continued to take the Australian cause forward with partnerships first with Steve Waugh and then with Tom Moody. However the Australian innings fell apart after the dismissal of Jones, setting India a target of 238 runs.

To say that the Indian chase started off disastrously would be an understatement. Srikkanth got out for a duck when the team total was only six. The way Ravi Shastri batted then defied logic. When he got out he had taken up 75 balls for his 25 runs and the Indian total at that time was a paltry 58 with almost half the overs already gone. Tendulkar came next and was dismissed for 11 trying to up the tempo. Kapil Dev came in next and scored a rapid fire 21 off 26 balls thereby providing some much needed impetus to the innings. When he left India still was in a precarious position of 4 for128.

Then came the superb partnership between Azharuddin and Sanjay Manjrekar. The two took the score to 194 before Azharuddin departed for a well made 93. The partnership was broken in the only way it seemed possible, through a run out. Then the rain started playing its part in the match. 3 overs were reduced from the Indian innings while only 2 runs were reduced from the target. After the rain interval India kept losing wickets while inching towards the target.

Off the last ball India needed 4 runs to win with 1 wicket in hand. Javagal Srinath was facing the bowler with Venkatapathy Raju at the other end. To this day I remember vividly the commentary of that last ball by Bill Lawry while watching it on TV. Tom Moody bowls the last delivery. Srinath takes an almighty swing at the ball and hits it high towards long on. Bill Lawry screams "It"s a SIX!!!". I start jumping up and down like crazy (I was 14 at the time). But I froze suddenly as both myself and Lawry realize that it"s not going for six but infact going into the hands of Steve Waugh. Incredibly Waugh drops the catch. Elation again!!! Waugh recovers quickly and throws the ball to the wicket keeper"s end. Raju sets off for the 3rd run which would make the match a tie. Lawry momentarily forgets that he is an Australian and yells "RUN!!! RUN!!! RUN!!!" The throw is wide and everyone including myself is praying that Raju does a superman. But the keeper recovers quickly enough to run him out and I was left with the biggest heartbreak of my life. That was the first and only time I had tears in my eyes after watching a cricket match. Just couldn"t believe what I had just witnessed!!!

More than these fun facts about soccer, this field of sports was named out of the "assoc" which is an abbreviation of association. Yes, soccer was primarily termed as association football back in the days. Whether it is in World Cup or Olympic Games, soccer has its place in the hearts of sports fanatics. The World Cup is deemed to be the largest convergence among soccer teams from all over the world. Billions of viewers wait for the games to be aired on the television to enjoy soccer's domination.

Speaking of soccer, David Beckham is probably the most hyped name and most recognized by sports followers. It's interesting to know the basic and fun facts about soccer. In any game, the players from two opposing teams run fast, switch pacing, jump high, pivot smartly, kick hard, head on, cut strategically and turn perfectly. It's largely a physically draining type of sport where technical skills are entailed in order to bring the ball to the goal. It's widely accepted that soccer kicked off in Britain and Sheffield FC is deemed to be the first club to be established in 1857. Sports broadcasters declare that this sport is the most followed and most played in any place of the globe. Among the popular soccer matches are London Derby, Manchester Derby, Milan Derby and a lot more usually in Europe.

The international leading group in soccer on a global perspective is the Federation International Football Association (FIFA). For the first time, FIFA World Championship was conducted in Chile in 1962 where Brazil dominated. Although soccer is not a widespread sport in the United States, it actually has more official soccer teams than any other country. Out of nearly 18 million, around 75% are below 18 years old. It was even deemed to be the most rapidly expanding college and high school field of sports in the United States in the early 1990's. These are a few interesting and fun facts about soccer.

Soccer teams from all countries must be looking forward to converging at the 2010 FIFA World Championship set to be done in South Africa. It's an interesting note to learn that Asian countries are also interested in playing soccer. Fun facts about soccer disclose that Japan placed third at the soccer finals in 1968 Olympic Games held in Mexico City. It's also fascinating to know that Kuwait had its stint at the FIFA World Cup in 1982. South Korea has also played during the World Cup in many years, wherein the latest was in 2006.

World Cup 2006: Trinidad and Tobago's Giant Killing Dreams

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The country with the smallest population ever to be represented in the FIFA World Cup is Trinidad and Tobago.Support for this team, however, will not only come from those born in the twin island state but from all its sister states in the Caribbean.Caribbean people all over the world will be singing, chanting, dancing and waving for the Soca Warriors. An impossible dream beats in the hearts of this Carnival fun loving nation.

Only four Caribbean teams have ever made it to the finals of this prestigious tournament since its inception in 1930.They are Cuba in the third World Cup in France,Haiti in the World Cup in Germany 1974 and Jamaica's lively Reggae Boyz in France 1998.

Trinidad and Tobago's Soca Warriors play their first round matches starting June 10 against Sweden ,followed by England on June 15 and Paraguay on June 20.

The Soca Warriors won a place in Germany by first emerging from their elimination matches to get into a group of six with the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama. They came fourth. Then they beat Bahrain 2-1 over a heart stopping two-legged play-off.They join USA,Mexico and Costa Rica as CONCACAF's representatives in World Cup 2006 in Germany.

Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence entered the realms of legend when his powerful header hit the back of the Bahrain net in Manama. He had scored the goal which booked Trinidad a finals place.

The team's manager is Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker who took over after an initial poor start in the six group CONCACAF playoff. His experienced skills organised and moulded the indifferent and inexperienced squad into World Cup finalists.Beenhakker is regarded as one of the strengths of the team because he is tactically astute and inspires his squad to perform at their best.

The Warrior's captain is 33-year-old **Dwight Yorke**. He is Trinidad and Tobago's greatest ever footballer. He came out of international retirement in 2005 to inspire his team from a central-midfield role. He has genuine top-level experience both in the UK and Australia. He and Stern John are the sort of players who can seize an opportunity and find the back of the net when needed.

The Soca Warriors are currently ranked 47 in the world. What are the odds of their winning? They are extremely long shots at 1000/1.Even their most ardent fans probably only hope for them to beat Paraguay in their final group B match on the 20th June. If they do that they would equal the feat of the Reggae Boyz who beat Japan in their final 1998 match in France. Look for Trinidad and Tobago to go ballistic if that happens. There will be celebrations the like of which has never been seen on the islands.

And what if they win or draw in their first two matches? Well the nation will probably go into orbit around the earth with joy.

For those who love the World Cup and who follow the game I would like to recommend a timely new book:World Class: An Illustrated History of Caribbean Football by James Ferguson. It has 116 photographs including one of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley in a knockabout match in Kingston,Jamaica.

Other books that deal with Caribbean or Black footballers are: Colouring Over The White Line:The History of Black footballers in Britain by Phil Vasili, Black Magic:England's Black Footballers by Brian Woolnough written in 1983.

Don't forget to pick up a copy of : One Love:The Reggae Boyz-An Incredible Soccer Journey by Robbie Earl and Daniel Davis,it's a chronicle of Jamaica's World Cup adventures.

I dream the impossible dream for the Soca Warriors. Light and love to them.
